IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0 – Freeware Office Suite alternative, with increased performance and significant improvements on response times, a possible future competitor of Microsoft Office.
IBM Lotus Symphony 3.0 has been released recently. This version offers support for Spreadsheets, Documents and Presentations.
IBM Lotus Symphony is based on OpenOffice kernel, but with increased compatibility with Microsoft VBA and OLE objects.
Although there not seemed to be a revelation, considering that the kernel is based on OpenOffice, the biggest improvement could be observed in the transition from Beta 3 to Beta 4, when IBM developers have managed to significantly optimize performance of IBM Lotus Symphony.
Downtimes for document open, save or print were reduced to the extreme. IBM Lotus Symphony is now considerably closer to the Microsoft Office performance.
Although still in its infancy, with plenty of side incompatibilities, especially with Microsoft Word, Lotus Symphony seems to be a viable alternative to Microsoft Office.
We look forward to new versions of IBM Lotus Symphony!
