Routers and Security

Router Security Issues

Most people, especially home users, after installing the router, if the internet connection works fine, they will not spend more time to solve basic security issues.

The biggest mistake you can make, this of course after the manufacturer makes one bigger than you, is not changing the router’s default password or worse, to leave the router without any password. Many manufacturers do not block, by default, internet access to router’s admin panel. If a person knows your router model, the default password and by default is granted to access the router from internet, it will be able to access your computer or your home network.

Because some applications require NAT for full functionality, users choose to enable router’s DMZ service. Without a good firewall, your computer can be easily infected with trojans, worms and viruses.

Some users use UPnP in order to have an easier and better control on embedded devices, this technology can be also dangerous when it comes to viruses, trojans or network security.

No matter which method you apply, if you do not know exactly what you are doing, would be better to think twice before you apply it or just ask a network specialist for help.

With a little research, you can securely implement any of the above methods. Also be aware that 70% of internet fraud (according to some statistics) occur in similar cases as those presented above.
